George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), known to the world as "Babe Ruth," was the first sports superstar. Popularly known as "Babe", "The Bambino", and "The Sultan of Swat", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914 to 1935.
Baseball player, borned in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, in a waterfront neighbourhood. His parents had eight children. While his parents worked in the tavern they owned, Ruth spent much of his time on his own.
He might have become baseball's greatest left-handed pitcher. Instead, he became its greatest hitter. Ruth's lifetime total of 714 home runs at his retirement in 1935 . At that point in baseball history, no other player had ever hit even half that many. It was a record that would stand for nearly four decades.
Ruth announced his retirement from baseball a week after his last performance at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, May 25, 1935.
